ABSTRACT
I have argued that religion and culture can be neither separated nor identified. The prophetic dimension of religion, represented today most clearly by liberation theology, puts insistent questions to high culture about its involvement with unjust power. Equally, Arnold's counter question to religion is concerned with bigotry and narrowness of vision. To press this dialogue further we need to consider the issues Arnold classically raises for us about the relation of high and popular culture.
