ABSTRACT

Christianity is the religion of man's prime, the ultimate religion which supersedes all other religions by gathering into itself all the values of other religions. Christianity is conceived as essentially a system of dogma, a way of thinking, but the dogmas of Christianity, although true, are opaque. For Hegel, Christianity and philosophy have the same content. Hence even today Marxist controversialists identify Christianity and idealism, neglecting entirely the running battle that has gone on between the two down the ages. In the second place, Hegel puts history in the centre of the picture, indeed he radically historicizes Christianity. Belief in a God who is alien, over against one, is at the root of man's problem. Only when he can overcome the idea of an externalized God and realize the ultimate unity of self and God is man liberated from alienation and enabled to be truly man.
