ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the recent increase in the number of refugees in Europe and focuses on the growing population of refugee children in the United Kingdom. We suggest that a new research and policy focus on one small but significant aspect of public health - that of changes in the diet of young children among migrants - will help in the development of interventions to ensure the long-term health of newly arrived refugee populations and thereby reduce expenditures. We describe the design of our current studies to assess food security and nutritional well being of pre-school refugee children in the UK, and progress made in initiating one such study is outlined.
