ABSTRACT

The success of US Airways' Altitude Awareness program, American Airline's ASAP and several other incident review processes have caused airlines to encourage their crews to debrief as a part of routine operations-not just when an irregular event occurs. Following the lead of Atlantic Coast Airlines, a number of carriers are adding 'crew debriefmg' as a required action item on their post~flight checklists. Done well, such reviews improve both the performance of individuals and the effectiveness of the overall crew. As a direct result, the corporate operation is enhanced - fewer mistakes, fewer delays, greater efficiency, lower cost, etc. However, in spite of its many obvious advantages, the line debriefing still faces a challenging struggle to become an accepted aspect of U.S. air carrier operations.
