ABSTRACT
The discussion of monitoring does not feature prominently in the literature on British urban policy. In terms of practice in British urban policy, monitoring plays a more dominant role. The Conservative government approach to the evaluation of urban policy, which was output driven, relied heavily on monitoring activities by the local agencies. Compared to evaluation, the subject of monitoring is under-researched. Of the major texts on the development of British urban policy, only Atkinson and Moon (1994) incorporated monitoring in their analysis. Even then, there was only scant discussion on the subject.
