ABSTRACT
The moral appeal of human rights has been used for varying purposes, from resisting torture and arbitrary incarceration to demanding the end of hunger and of medical neglect. There is hardly any country in the worldfrom China, South Africa and Egypt to Mexico, Britain and the United States - in which arguments involving human rights have not been raised in one context or another in contemporary political debates.
