ABSTRACT

Wayne, the production manager of Smith Shelving, believes in delegating authority just as the management books tell him to. A very busy man, he wants desperately to unload some responsibility on his employees. This is what happened on the Lacey job, a job that had to be redone because John messed up the dimensions. Progress reports are essential in delegation. The degree and kind of spot checks will vary with the jobs. Obviously, a small delegation can be handled with an oral report at a predetermined time and date. However, handling a major order for an irritated customer with a customer-imposed deadline may require daily progress reports. Preparation of a major funding request that you will be working on for weeks may need to have written reports to follow up on progress of the project. There are a variety of means that you can use to monitor the delegation: informal meetings, memos, formal reports, flow charts, checklists, calendars, etc.
