ABSTRACT

I shall now try to identify the values and ethical principles which form the basis of existing environmental management and policy. My approach is to examine a number of core national and international documents on environmental policy. The aim is to identify, systematize and critically review the values which are presupposed in these documents and to use them to construct a more comprehensive environmental ethic. The primary documents for examination are the World Commission's Report Our Common Future (1988), the UN Agenda 21 (1992), The Rio Declaration (1992) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (1992), and the Swedish National Environment Protection Board's report Ett miljoanpassat samhalle (A Sustainable Society) (1993).
