ABSTRACT

B ut whom can I make my Applications to, but to the Mod B[illegible text] God, because He only knows the secrets of ray Heart and the desires of my foal is not hid from him; Therefore I dedicate my breath unto him, imploring his Mercy to bless all my intention; for I have not desired any thing but what has been for the good of all : for the sole cause of all my Actions was to divert his Judgments, and implore his Mercies, and my Applications to Ring CHARLES was chat he should appease his Anger by mending bis ways; And as for King JAMES all his Reign, God bears me with of the sincerity of my heart cowards his Truth, and how Manfully I fought under his Banner against all Opposets; and yet at the same time I told him dearly. I did not do any thing out of spight, but out of pure sincerity, knowing that it would be his overthrow. My Applications to the King was that he should decline Antichristian Worship, for I knew it was wholly impossible that he could walk moderately. I told him the Priests would make him run when he designed to go, but I could not prevail, because I had so many against me, yet notwithstanding I was not treacherous, but greiv’d when his trouble came, and when he was gone I was very much concern’d for the Peace of this Kingdom; and was it ever known in the World so great change with so much Peace and so little Damage; and though I was not willing the Prince should take the Crown, because I knew it was more for his glory to let it alone: yet notwithstanding none will be more since him then I shall And as for her Majesty I have a high Veneration for her because of her Piety, and by her Example the has made the Court more Civil and Modest then it was before, and I do not doubt hut her sincerity to God, teaches her Majesty her Duty towards her Father, to make prayers with tears to God for him, that be may be sensible of his deplorable condition in going to promote Antichristian Worship against the true Worship of his God, which hath incurr’d his Displeasure against him. Oh that the Lord may make the Queen as an Angel, that she may do her Father good; for if the Angels re joyce at the conversion of one sinner; surely the wholes Host would rejoice at his conversion. And how glorious would it be for Her Majesty, when she bas ended this life, to be received into the Habitation of those blessed Spirits. How great will her joy be who was the cause of theirs. It is not only the joy of Angels but the joy of God, that his People should be wife and lay hold on Salvation : And to this end when my blessed Saviour had Triumphed over Death and Hell, He sent the Holy Ghost to sanctifie his and to guide them into all Truth, that they might be preserved from the Evil of this World. But what high ingratitude it is for Men to neglect the meant of Salvation, which made my Blessed Saviour to weep over Serusalem, because it refused chose things chat would have made for their eternal, happiness. And what is it that bewitches Men that they are not obedient to the Truth but the Devil, and that has been the sole cause of my Fastings, that I might weaken and prevail over him, and chat my Fourteen Days and Nights, and 13, and three times 12, and all the rest that I have published to the World, have been sincerely perform’d without the caste or relish of any thing in this World, And chat all my Papes and Books chat I have published with my Name have been sincerely mine : And my going to Wind for, in the Morning and returning home the same Night on foot, and sometimes went failing and returned fasting without the caste or relish of any thing, is sincerely true: and for all my Labours and Travels, this Paper will not contain them, and that I never had either Bribes or Rewards, neither was I put on by any Man, but what I did I did of my self. And I will a flare you I will do no hurt to any body but good to all; for if the King of France should come to set King JAMES on his Throne, I think it would be all our duties to War against him, as an enemy to oar Countrey; and although I love King JAMES, yet the King of France’s kind nest should not oblige me to be treacherous either to God or my Countrey; and it is my thoughts that whoever does any thing to bring him in, it will come to nothing, at it did in King CHARES the II’s Case. But when God it Reconciled, by his acknowledging the evil of his ways and turning sincerely with his whole Heart to God, then shall the King and Queen and Kingdom be Reconciled to him in Peace ; Oh then how great will his Joy be, and what a comfort to us to be in Peace. And I hope I shall not offend any body by wishing and desiring this; for it would be for Gods glory, the Joy of Angel and the good of Mankind, and is the duty of every Good Christian to wish and desire it. And God knows how dearly I love the good and welfare of this City, and I lore that Magistrates should be respected, but try sole desire is that they should be all of a Unity. I would not have them some for Paul and some for Apolie, but I would have them all of one heart and and one soul. And I would have the whole Court of Aldermen to attend my Lord Mayor; for it is a fine fight to fee Magistrates to be in Unity : and since the Most High God hath been Pleased to Establish his Worship for the good of Mankind, I would not have any Man to be an Enemy to it, either to Despise or Reject it; for it is a great sin to be an enemy to Gods Worship, and I hope no Man will dare to deny it to be his, when with such Power he brought it out of Darkness into light and made King EDWRD VI. like good Hezekiah, Zealous for the Establishing Her; and though Queen Mary would have destroyed Her, yet God railed up Queen ELIZABETH to preserve Her, and God inspired her with Wisdom and Sincerity, that she convey ’d h r Care to King JAMES the I who was both Learned and Wife; and by this Family She hath been defended to this very present. There for how great a Cause have I to love the Race of the STEWARDS for Her fake, who is more precious then all the Jewels in the World. For She teaches Men to love Mercy, to do Justice, and to walk humbly with God, and to do to all Men as ye would they should eh to you. Therefore she is acceptable before God, and he will punish her Adversaries, and pauge them that hate her and surely they will draw Judgments upon themselves that hate the STEWARDS, for her fake : therefore I would not have you Peck; for though your Fathers prevailed, you have a Score to pay. It is a great Pride to condemn your Brother, and to presume in contown Wisdom, and to stand in your own strength, as if there was no God to Govern you, which surely Gentlemen you Most do; for if you did not, you would not fear an Honest Man to Govern you : for who can lay an ill thing to Sir Jonathan Raymond: and that he is sincere against Popery the World cannot deny, for he would not truckle to it when it was upon the Throne, when Sir John Shorter truckled to it in consenting to invite the Popes Nuncio, when Sir Jonathan Raymond would not, but pleaded that it was a breach in Law, and here you see chat the Lord Mayor could not Impose upon him; all that knows him, knows him to be an honest Man, and it for the Peace of Church and State, which is crime enough now a days, as is Instance in this present Lord Mayor; for be has been a good Magistrate and is sweedy tempered, and would not do an ill thing co any body, but good to all; for be is kind to the poor and Just to the Rich; and yet how soon you Dissenters turn’d your backs upon this good Magistrite, and Vilified him to his face. Oh ! how ungraceful are you to abuse your Friend; for he had not took a false step in his Government, had it not been to humour you. His end would have been more glorious then his beginning if he had done Sir William Gere Right, and that he had been Sheriff; but Magistrates may give their Fouls as well as their Bodies, and yet not satisfie you; for they deny their own ease and pleasure to serve you, and it is a small thing if you can not return Love and Respect for all their Labours And as as for Sir Thomas Lane, I don’t doubt but he will prove a better Magistrate then the World thinks for; And none need doubt but Sir Thomas Cook will prove a good Magistrate, for he is sweetly tempered and has goods in him. And as for Sir William Ashurst he is a Man of part, and God forbid that any should be against them when their time is, and God forbid any Man should be for them before their t me is come. I cannot be for any body but for Sir Jonathan Raymond, because I know it will be more for the Good of this City and Peace of this Kingdom : And I will in gage there shall be damage come. It is rot that ! have such an Interest in Sir Jonathan as the love of Justice: And for ought I know one cause that we thrive no better abroad,is because we are not Just at home. Oh learn to be Just, for that is pleating both to God and Man and since Men fling off their Liveries, it cannot be decided without a Pole, and I hope no honest good Men will be ashamed to pole for Sir Jonathan Raymond; to you will Act like Honest Men which the God grant you may. And in so doing you will do your selves the greatest good. For happy is the Man that can withstand temptations. And now to the God of Truth, that knows the sincerity of my heart, and is able to make you wife to salvation, if you are but willing, all Honour and Glory be given to Him for ever and ever. Amen. Gentlemen, Irest your Souls well-wisher Elinor James.
