ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the importance of marriage in Islam and the tradition of arranged marriage. Marriage is an institution so universal that any simple definition of it is negated by the sheer variety of its manifestations. The institution of marriage is highly regarded in Islam and the family is considered as the fundamental unit in Muslim society. Marriage is a milestone that has significance for both Muslim parents and their children. A major dilemma facing many women in contemporary society is whether to have a career or marriage. While women are increasingly able to achieve both, it requires substantial juggling. Consanguineous marriage refers to marriage between two persons who have the same lineage. Consanguineous marriage arouses powerful prejudices. Inter-racial and inter-religious marriage is a sensitive area and even today, in many societies, this kind of intermarriage is regarded with disfavour. Marriage, like all other religio-socio-cultural institutions is a dynamic phenomenon.
