ABSTRACT

The way we take photographic images has changed phenomenally over the past decade. Although film cameras have been an affordable and popular household item for the past century, the growing use of digital imaging technologies is permanently transforming the way in which we take, share and comment on photographic images, encouraging us to take many more pictures than ever before, which are accrued on cameras, computers and mobile phones. However, problems with the long-term viability of digital image data mean that many personal digital photography collections will not survive for future generations. Unless the problem is confronted, our visual understanding of the early twenty-first century will be compromised.
