ABSTRACT
One of the most memorable Dickensian scenes centers around the figure of young Oliver Twist asking for more gruel in the workhouse. It is mem orable partly because it is composed as a scene, a literary set-piece, much in the manner of the images of contemporary life in Sketches by Boz.
