There were no queens1 in Byzantium. The evidence for same-sex desire in Byzantium is sparse, and its interpretation relies on the recognition of possibilities rather than identifying certainties, but to ignore same-sex desire in a volume on Desire and Denial would be to be 'in denial' indeed.2
