ABSTRACT

The modalities have chiefly to do with the way nature is envisioned, the way nature is named, the speed at which nature is transformed, and the affect (image, concept, sense) of nature subsequently produced. This chapter discusses these factors since they influence – both implicitly and explicitly –the manner by which various disciplines talk about, construct, perform, and write Nature. The label ascribed to a given stand or section of forest will therefore depend on two factors – age and known or surmised disturbance history. Forests exhibit various growth stages. Each growth stage has the potential to be impacted either by 'human' or 'natural' processes. The naming of forest types, species conservation thresholds, national parks, and the like proceeds precisely according to this logic. The chapter concludes with a very brief survey of the main criminological implications which may be drawn from the preceding case study.
