ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with aspects of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the mining industry, which is one of the most important sectors of the world economy. Mining sector is highly developed in many countries and in some cases, defines the success of national economies. The complexity of CSR in the mining industry relates to the fact that mining companies originating from developed countries of the Western Europe, North America and Australia, operate many mining projects in developing countries of Asia, Africa and South America. The concept of CSR is derived from several concepts and theories such as legitimacy theory, concepts of social contract and public responsibility, stakeholder theory, business ethics and corporate citizenship. Corporate citizenship the concept of CSR is closely linked to the wider concept of corporate citizenship. CSR is viewed as a comprehensive set of policies, practices and programmes that are reviewed by corporate top managers.
