ABSTRACT

This Chapter presents territorial specifics within which Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategies of mining companies develop using a case study of gold and diamond mining in the Republic of Sakha, a part of the Russian Federation. It describes the development of CSR in the Russian Federation as a whole the particulars of gold mining and diamond mining industries, environmental misuse in the Russian Federation associated with mining operations and development. The chapter also describes the regional level for the development of CSR , particularly referring to gold mining and diamond mining in the Republic of Sakha and regional environmental impacts of mining. It focuses on the local contextual level for development of CSR. The Russian North is a geographical zone that occupies around 65 per cent of the Russian Federation, where the majority of oil, gas, coal, nickel, rare-earth elements, tin, gold and diamond reserves are found.
