ABSTRACT

There is a growing need for mining companies to reassess their corporate strategies in relation to environmental and social issues in order to demonstrate greater corporate social responsibility (CSR) and prominent role in progress towards sustainable development. Global mining companies as shown in the analysis of corporate disclosure of the top gold and diamond mining companies are increasingly concerned about their environmental, social and economic impacts on the society. Mining companies usually develop their corporate policies, which apply to their entire global operations as well as operations of their subsidiaries. Further research into CSR in the mining industry could be undertaken in several key areas. They include: ethical dimension of mining industry; land right of indigenous people; economic contribution of mining projects to local economic development; impacts of mining projects on the social and cultural structure of local communities; and evaluation of community programs.
