ABSTRACT

In his study, Holy Terrors, Bruce Lincoln has analysed the deep fusion between religion and culture in what he describes as 'maximalist' manifestations of religion. Christian theology argues that the fact of God has consequences for all human life. Christian theology is centred on Jesus Christ, as decisive for the welfare of humanity at every level, in both individual and social contexts. The Christian understanding of the human is a fragile, potentially transient and clearly precious contribution. Christian faith believes that human rights abuse is not the last word in God's purposes for humanity. Compliance with human rights directives requires the recognition of legitimate authority and the willingness to comply. Declarations of human rights by the United Nations and other bodies remain theoretical ideas until they are recognized and encoded in treaties with legal sanction. Nations, organizations or individuals may make complaints to the UN Human Rights Committee.
