ABSTRACT

Christology is about divinity and humanity, about God reconciling the world to himself in Christ. At the centre of Christology is the fact that Jesus begins his ministry in the unglamorous setting of Galilee and preaches to fishermen. The trajectory of a humanist Christology recognizes divinity precisely in a humanity that is oriented towards others. A Christology which engages with human rights will be likely to learn from a broad stream of traditions. Human rights concerns are not an occasion for taking a holiday from geopolitical realities. A prime example of the value of emancipatory theology in unmasking human rights violation is the development of feminist theology. In the field of human rights, the understanding of Christ as reconciler is likely to be particularly relevant. Human rights are concerned with the quality of human relations, both individual and corporate, and the need to protect the dignity of human beings.
