ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to describe the role of the unique geringsing cloth and the village of Tenganan, where it is produced, in attracting tourists and how this can be improved. Tenganan Pegeringsingan, besides being selected as a research subject for this article, has long been an interesting object of tourism, and now it is one of the most popularly visited villages in Bali. The total of tourist visits during the last three years, based on the numbers in the Tenganan village's guest book is as follows: at the end of 1994, the number of foreign tourists was 15,637 with domestic visitors of 2,152; in 1995, the number of foreign tourists was 28,422 with domestic visitors of 2, 726; while in 1996, the number of foreign tourists was 33,380 with domestic visitors of 7,814. Based on the stated number of tourist visits to Tenganan, it can be concluded that there was a high increase, averaging 53.5 per cent, in the visits during the three year period. The interesting thing of those statistics is that there is an increasing interest in domestic tourists in visiting Tenganan Pegeringsingan village, representing an increase of 131.55 per cent.
