ABSTRACT

The consistency is achieved by the use of a biometric measuring device which scans and delivers in automated format for storage certain physical characteristics of a person. These characteristics are encoded in the ‘smart card’, which is used as the travel document, and can verify the identity of the holder of the card as the true owner of the card through a ‘matching’ process with his biometric data. At its most advanced stage of usage, the smart card and physical check can be used to determine the identity of the person electronically at departure and transmit the details through a system of electronic data interchange to his point of arrival, where the information already transmitted by the departure point can be compared for verification by the ‘swiping’ process on arrival.
