ABSTRACT

Meteorological conditions play a significant role in air safety. It is, therefore, essential to develop a sound understanding of these factors in early formal pilot training. Most current pilot training programs appear to place little emphasis on understanding, interpretation and prediction of prevailing and/or impending weather conditions. Consequent to the increasing automation of weather information within the aviation industry, a greater burden is emerging for pilots to be able to conduct 'self briefings', effectively assess their own limitations and to make appropriate decision regards the safety of flight in certain weather conditions.
