ABSTRACT

En route air traffic controllers in the United States are responsible for ensuring the safe, orderly, and expeditious progression of aircraft between controlled airports and the arrival and departure of aircraft entering or leaving uncontrolled airports. To accomplish this, controllers observe aircraft positions on a radar display and review flight plan information. One method of reviewing flight plan information involves the use of paper flight progress strips (hereafter called "flight strips.") A flight strip contains printed flight plan information about an aircraft (see Figure 27.1). A controller may review flight plan information by glancing at the flight strip or may access the information by using a keyboard to display either textual flight data on the Computer Readout Device (CRD) or a line showing the route on the Plan View Display (PVD).
