ABSTRACT

The nature of the aviation environment is such that there are a number of competing demands on flight crew to manage information, and ensure an appropriate outcome to a flight. In many cases, however, the management of task-related information is constrained by the environment and, in particular, the time available in which to evaluate various options. Anecdotal evidence arising from aircraft accidents in both the airline and general aviation environments, suggest that time constraints impact significantly upon the decision-making behaviour of flight crew. This study is part of a larger program of research that is designed to examine the impact of time constraints on the process of decision-making amongst experienced and inexperienced pilots.
