ABSTRACT
From the beginnings of Christianity and down the centuries there was, as we have seen in the previous chapter, a continuing debate about saints, heroes and martyrs, models of virtue in the public sphere, a debate which has suddenly become urgently relevant again today. This was in part the conflict between classical and heroic understandings of virtue and what the Church tries to teach about the proper life for human beings.
