As elsewhere along the Adriatic and Ionian Sea coasts, the governor, Provveditore, of Zante was a Venetian resident in a strong fortress in the town of Zante, but the islanders were Greeks, ‘a kind of subtile people, and great dissemblers’; and the concentration there on the cash crop of fruit production meant that staple cereals had to be imported from the Peloponnesus mainland.41
