ABSTRACT

From a theological perspective, humans are unique because we have been addressed by God in a particular way. One may immediately add that other species have been addressed by God too. We are called to respond from within the earth community to the particular Word which God has addressed to us (in Jesus Christ). Other species are called to respond to God in their own unique ways. In my view, this position does not fall into the trap of anthropocentrism. Instead, it calls for a far an even more penetrating theological critique of the anthropocentrism which pervades much of contemporary theology (Section 3.3).
