Slowly but inexorably any attempt to create large spaces with a sense of holiness through echoes or chiaroscuros was stripped away, because, for the Carmelites, the ordinary, the mundane and the everyday were inherently saturated with divine ‘Presence’. Sert, however, was open to such changes:
