Slowly but inexorably any attempt to create large spaces with a sense of holiness through echoes or chiaroscuros was stripped away, because, for the Carmelites, the ordinary, the mundane and the everyday were inherently saturated with divine ‘Presence’. Sert, however, was open to such changes:
Collaboration with individuals of the work team develops as time advances and elements that compose the building will find their shapes, relationships and links as the process develops.…Exchanges of views developing in conversations (a lost art today) will range from the emotional to the practical, from the dream, to the reality, trying to preserve most of the ideals before sacrificing them to the limitations imposed by realities.2
