ABSTRACT

Our opening chapters have examined the meaning, purpose and origins of Western aid. While providing invaluable background material, the early part of this book has not looked in any depth at the French or UK development programmes and has not attempted to answer the working questions set out in the introduction. This chapter will make a start on answering these questions. It will focus specifically on France's and Britain's aid efforts and on their motives for providing development assistance over the Cold War years.
