ABSTRACT

The popularity of superstar culture is a worrying feature of modern society. Since it is founded on a short-term vision, it leads people to think in purely selfish and individualistic terms. Its application to the business world, and in particular the lack of long-term vision that characterises it, means that the economic system is facing the risk of declining, if not collapsing. The combination of wealth and power also entails other risks for the economic system. A classic example is monopolies. The monopolies cause serious harm to the economy and, ultimately, to consumers who are forced to pay artificially high prices. Another consequence of the superficial and materialistic culture portrayed by the image of the superstar is the unjustified disparity between salaries that it has created. The objective should be that of stressing the correlation between salary levels and the contribution that remunerated human activities or professions make to society's progress and welfare.
