ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to stimulate students through small-scale, but highly challenging, written tasks, to work through an array of different exercises, and thus to use group sessions as an arena for practical, problem-solving work. It also aims to encourage students to help other students with the activities involved. The workbook can incorporate a variety of exercises: tables to complete, blank boxes to fill in with definitions and summaries, graphs and diagrams to analyse, true-or-false puzzles to grapple with and multiple-choice questions to answer. Workbooks can be used intermittendy or set courses can be structured around workbook use. Students can work through them in pairs or small groups and the tutor can circulate. Workbook exercises can also be used on a more occasional basis allocated, for example, to 15- or 20-minute slots in selected classes.
