ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses students' attention on key continuities and themes evident within a course. It aims to force students to think in a different way - that is, to consider global themes rather than questions on the specific syllabus topics. Students are asked to deliberate on, and then fill in, 'study cards' produced by the tutor - cards which can ultimately provoke good and highly relevant student discussion. The tutor hands out identical copies of a set study card to small student groups. Students have to complete the card and, in the process, they will be able to discuss key issues and record their group's views on it. Students will engage in discussion and in-depth analysis of a key theme or issue - and they will have a well structured card to refer back to and to use for revision.
