ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the activity of the committee system in a nutshell, aim of the activity, need of the activity, time required for the activity, how the activity works and the advantages of the activity. The committee system increases student involvement and 'ownership', but also leaves room for an authoritative tutor input. The activity aims to involve students in the organization and running of a group session, and to incorporate student opinion and staff expertise. The tutor returns, and acts as an ordinary group member for the following hour inputting where appropriate, but generally keeping a fairly low profile. The class ends with a 20-minute summary or commentary from the tutor, analysing the discussion, its merits and its defects. Students will produce their own class session, and will benefit from both their own input and that of the tutor.
