ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the activity of the fishbowl in a nutshell, aim of the activity, need of the activity, time required for the activity, how the activity works and the advantages of the activity. This technique alters the arrangement of the group session to create one small discussion group and another group of observers. The activity aims to illuminate the nature of group discussion to students, and to improve two key academic skills: debate and analysis of debate. The inside circle debates a key issue and, after 15 minutes, the second 'outer' circle offer their own critique of the debate they have just witnessed. Some students might feel ill-at-ease with what they might perceive as the contrived nature of the group set-up. Students will be exposed to three different discussion formats and expected to take on different roles in each.
