ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the activity of the set debate in a nutshell, aim of the activity, need of the activity, time required for the activity, how the activity works and the advantages of the activity. This activity aims to bring alive a crucial two-sided argument, and to give students a line to argue and to make them argue this - even if they do not agree with it! A controversial academic issue is debated by two sets of opposing and well prepared student protagonists. The classroom is split in two: one group of students to the left, another to the right. The chair introduces the debate and asks the spokespeople for the two principal views to introduce their perspective on the question. Students will be involved and engaged in an important debate, and will have been exposed to both sides of an argument.
