ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the activity of set oral roles in a nutshell, aim of the activity, need of the activity, time required for the activity, how the activity works and the advantages of the activity. This activity aims to liberate students by cutting down on tutor input and involvement, and to give students ownership, and to transfer the onus of making the session work on to them. At the beginning of term all the students in a group are put on a rota and during the term each is designated a set of roles - chair, presenter, discussant and participant. At each class, the chair introduces the topic, the presenter presents a paper and the discussant - who has had a copy of the paper prior to the class - puts forward a critique or response.
