ABSTRACT

Dispense with the normal 'discussion' of ideas and, instead, bring ideas alive via role-play. Create a realistic everyday situation and insert protagonists (role-play characters) whose task it is to personify and illuminate distinct ideas - ideas which have already been outlined and highlighted in other class sessions. Act out a 'situation' and see the different ideological positions emerge. The tutor introduces the general topic and identifies the key ideas under the spotlight. The class discusses the key ideas under consideration, and the tutor familiarizes the 'actors' with the 'scene' in which they have to make the ideas come alive. The actors put their full efforts into illuminating the ideas in words and actions. The tutor closes the scene, and the class comes together to reflect on the role-play and the abstract ideas which emerged.
