ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the activity of 3-D ideas in a nutshell, aim of the activity, need of the activity, time required for the activity, how the activity works and the advantages of the activity. The activity aims to think about ideas in a totally fresh manner, and to make ideas more 'real' and 'accessible'. It also aims to catalyse discussion around the central concept and the 'shapes' by which it is represented. Students, either individually or in pairs, are given some kind of raw material, such as Lego or Plasticine, with which to shape the idea or concept under consideration. After moulding 'democracy as a 3-D shape, the student then depicts the shape in a drawing; four equal small circles within a large circle. The obvious idea here is that democracy is about equality and about everyone having equal power and worth within a democracy.
