ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the activity of sub-ideas within a big idea in a nutshell, aim of the activity, need of the activity, time required for the activity, how the activity works and the advantages of the activity. This activity explores the make-up, the character and the nature of big ideas. More specifically, the exercise seeks to promote understanding of important concepts by splitting them up into their component parts. Small student groups are asked to write out important 'sub-ideas' and 'sub-themes' on Post-it notes which are then displayed on the classroom wall for everyone to see and discuss. The activity aims to bring ideas alive - making them more 'real' by putting them up on the wall, so students can actually 'see' them and relate to them better. It also aims to simplify and clarify key abstract concepts, and to emphasize the interrelationships evident between them.
