ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to engage students more fully in visual analysis, to inject a 'guessing game' element into groupwork discussion and to stimulate students through competition and a game-style classroom format. Students, in small sub-groups, are given a set of images to study, analyse and caption. The images might be cartoons, posters or something else. All the captions are cut off or Tippexed out. The students have to discuss and evaluate the sources and imagine or predict what captions would be appropriate for what images. Each subgroup then writes its new captions on separate sheets of A4 paper. The groups' different caption ideas for each are put up on the wall. Students will be encouraged to think about, analyse and decode important visual images, and they will engage in a focused classroom discussion.
