ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the activity of text and context in a nutshell, aim of the activity, need of the activity, time required for the activity, how the activity works and the advantages of the activity. The tutor splits up the group in an attempt to analyse and explore the text more thoroughly, with each subgroup given specific areas and questions to assess. This activity aims to set important texts in context and to understand the true nature and meaning of key extracts. It also aims to prepare students for answering document/extract questions. The tutor introduces the exercise and, with the whole group, looks over and familiarizes themselves with the key text. Students will acquire an important awareness of contextualization - an understanding of the different influences on, and consequences of, a certain text - and also an improved ability to tackle document/extract commentaries.
