ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the activity of quotation deconstruction in a nutshell, aim of the activity, need of the activity, time required for the activity, how the activity works and the advantages of the activity. Institute a thorough and in-depth analysis of a key quotation or short passage by copying the quote onto a large wall poster and then deconstructing it. The key quotation/passage is written, using a felt-tip marker pen, on a massive wall poster and fixed to the classroom wall. The class begins to analyse the language and vocabulary in the passage, with students in turn denoting and marking the significant words with the pen. By the end of the class, the quotation should have been thoroughly dissected, with discussion ensuing as each aspect of it is noted and considered. Students will be helped to think about key quotations that appear in essay questions, and also short passages that often form the basis of document/extract commentaries.
