ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the activity of newspaper headlines in a nutshell, aim of the activity, need of the activity, time required for the activity, how the activity works and the advantages of the activity. The activity aims to concentrate students minds on the content of important texts. It also aims to make students think about the salient and keynote features of significant passages. Small student subgroups are given a selection of key newspaper reports, with their headlines removed, to study and, ultimately, 'headline'. The students read the passages, evaluate the main issues involved and designate an effective, pertinent headline for each story. The tutor then chairs a discussion about the headlines, the reports and the way in which the new headlines capture the essence of the stories. Students will be exposed to a series of newspaper reports - a key type of source - and will use their judgement to summarize the passages and justify their decisions.
