ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the activity of create a charter in a nutshell, aim of the activity, need of the activity, time required for the activity, how the activity works and the advantages of the activity. The activity aims to illuminate the 'process' involved in the writing of official documents, including the problems and difficulties. It also aims to enable students to compare and contrast 'real' and 'student-written' texts. Combat the possible boredom and dullness of combing through a 'real-life' charter or official document by keeping the real text hidden and asking students to create their own document, basing their efforts on their own innate background knowledge and their own insights into what has gone wrong with the real one. Having outlined the principles upon which a key charter was constructed in a previous session, the tutor asks the students to write their 'imaginary', 'ultimate' or 'Utopian' charters.
