ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the activity of role-play a text in a nutshell, aim of the activity, need of the activity, time required for the activity, how the activity works and the advantages of the activity. Analyse a text through role-play. Pick out the key characters, allocate a key character to each student subgroup, and then structure the group discussion around the characters and their roles and motivations in the text. The activity aims to bring texts alive, and to involve all students, actively, in the explanation and analysis of a text. The set text is unveiled, and the identities of the key characters are determined and discussed. Each figure in the text is 'given' to a small student subgroup which then thinks about, and analyses, the significant characteristics of 'their' person, and how their character is involved in the text, including the nature of involvement, its underlying motivations and consequences.
