ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the activity of vox pop in a nutshell, aim of the activity, time required for the activity, how the activity works and the advantages of the activity. This activity attempts to engage students in the process of vox pops, straw polls and opinion polls. A vox pop is conducted in class, with all students having a set role to play. The activity aims to make students more aware of vox pops and opinion polls - how they operate and the problems associated with them and to create a role-play situation in which students have to think about how respondents in certain situations and under certain circumstances would think, and what opinions they would hold. Students might want to know more about their group identity. It should be explained that the whole idea of the activity is that they have to deduce, and speculate on, attitudes and opinions knowing only minimal details about their own character.
