ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the activity of bogus statistics in a nutshell, aim of the activity, time required for the activity, how the activity works and the advantages of the activity. Hand out a table of data with one or several 'bogus' statistics included. Ask the students to identify the rogue figures, and use this 'game' as a prelude to discussion about the nature of statistics. The activity aims to encourage students to exploit their own innate knowledge and 'predict' data in an informed, authoritative manner and to create stimulating discussion on an important topic by means of a brief 'game'. It takes the form of an enjoyable puzzle, which can reveal important themes. Students have to use their intelligence and insight to deduce the correct answers. Students will use their knowledge to justify their decisions and account for the difference between real and bogus statistics.
