ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the activity of politics in a nutshell, aim of the activity, time required for the activity, how the activity works and the advantages of the activity. Enter the world of make-believe by asking students to 'invent' their own political party solely on the basis of a series of statistics. The political party should be designed just to win elections, and just to gain power. The activity aims to stretch students' imaginations and knowledge and to stimulate discussion in buzz groups and in the class as a whole. It draws on students' knowledge and insights in a whole range of spheres. All tutors are agreed that numbers and tables are difficult to teach. Particularly in the humanities and the social sciences, students are often confronted by a daunting array of electoral data, opinion poll findings and tables of economic statistics.
