ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to bring subjects alive via artefacts, to expose students to authentic and possibly problematic material and to catalyse discussion around the evidence of artefacts. The artefacts are circulated around the room in a clockwise direction, with each group making notes, on separate pieces of card, about the artefacts it receives. Students will be exposed to various artefacts and will be encouraged to both discuss their observations and relate the evidence of the artefacts to that contained in more conventional texts and documents. A five-minute exercise can, potentially, help students grasp and understand an extremely difficult and complex topic. It can also help provoke, catalyse and stimulate excellent debate, with discussion centring around the externalized images produced by students or the set visual images under consideration.
