ABSTRACT
The American Museum of Natural History in New York, one of the largest and most comprehensive anywhere, was not only a typical product ofnineteenth-century scientific and positivist ideas, but perhaps also an expression of the the ever-increasing economic, political and social self-confidence of the United States in the latter part of the century.
